Anything and Everything You Want to Know About Math-U-See Gamma

Are you wondering about the Math-U-See Gamma level? Well, I am so glad you’re here, because I’m here to tell you about it!

But first, what is Math-U-See anyway? Math-U-See is the math curriculum from Demme Learning (also the creators of Spelling-U-See, Analytical Grammar, and more!). It uses a multi-sensory mastery method of learning and focuses on understanding how numbers and concepts relate to one another instead of memorization.

I first discovered Math-U-See when looking for a supplemental curriculum for my child, who was struggling with addition and subtraction math facts. It was so successful that we completely switched our homeschooling math curriculum to Math-U-See!

What Does Gamma Mean?

One of my favorite things about this curriculum is levels are not based on age or grade level. Instead, they are based purely on skill level and named with innocuous labels (the Greek alphabet). This is a subtle yet impactful difference, especially when you have a child not on a typical grade level for whatever reason.

Math-U-See Gamma is the level that introduces and teaches multiplication. It covers both single-digit and multi-digit multiplication using place value strategies. And while multiplication fluency is the focus of Gamma, other concepts are also taught. These include:

  • Adding and Subtracting Time
  • Basic Fractions
  • Estimating Measurements
  • Measuring and Interpreting Data
  • Adding, Subtracting, and Multiplying Money

The Math-U-See Gamma level includes the teacher instructional book, a DVD with all the lessons, a student workbook, a test booklet, an integer block set, and lifetime access to Gamma’s digital files.

How Do the Daily Lessons Work?

Daily lessons for Math-U-See Gamma are simple, clear, and concise. For each lesson, students watch a short video that covers new material. You can watch these lessons on the DVD or online from your digital files. I think you’re going to like how the instructor incorporates the integer blocks into learning.

After the video, parents assign practice problems from the student workbook. Each lesson has three worksheets covering new material and three worksheets of review.

Students have plenty of opportunities to master concepts before moving on. In fact, you are encouraged to spend as much time as your student needs on one lesson before moving on. The student sets the pace. The student workbook has a total of 30 lessons. So, with one new lesson a week, Math-U-See Gamma would be your curriculum for the year. Or, if your student moves more quickly through the lessons, you would move on to the Delta level next.
